Louisville, KY (AHN) – The Louisville Cardinals fired football coach Steve Kragthorpe Saturday morning. Kragthorpe went 15-21 in three seasons at Louisville.

Athletic director Tom Jurich and Kragthorpe had a meeting Saturday morning.

“I felt we needed to go in another direction and get this program back on the track,” said Jurich.

Jurich and Kragthorpe agreed on a .2 million buyout. Kragthorpe had two years left on his deal that paid him .1 million a year.

“I was hoping we’d get over the hump this year,” Jurich said. “I thought we could get through the year and really build some momentum and obviously that didn’t happen.”

The university will work fast to find a new head coach.

Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and Florida’s defensive coordinator Charlie Strong could be in the running for the post.

Sumlin and Strong present a small problem as their seasons are still in progress.

Both of their schools play December 5, so they are understandably busy.

ESPN.com is reporting former Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer is interested in the position.

Texas Tech’s Mike Leach and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville’s names have come up as well.

Jurich said he’s looking for someone who can bring energy back to a program that was an emerging national power when Kragthorpe took over for Bobby Petrino.

The Cardinals went 12-1, won the Big East title and the Orange Bowl in Petrino’s last season.
