Locating Cheap Motorcycles

Posted on November 22 2009 by Thomas Crown

Motorcycles have been around for almost a hundred years and just as its hard to try to pin down where they were first invented and who was the genius behind the idea its almost impossible to explain why so many people are in love with these wonderful machines. Be it the thrill of the open road or the excitement that comes form the feeling of almost flying as you go down the highway, the motorcycle lifestyle is a way of living that gets down into your soul. The Motorcycle is a very personal machine and finding the right one at the right price is often hard to do.. if you are having a hard time finding cheap motorcycles to consider when looking at your purchase use these tips to make things easier.

Because of the interconnected world we live today there are a wide variety of methods and tools that you can use to locate the bike of your dreams. You are not limited anymore to merely magazines or trader papers and you do not have to worry about the limitations of distance when looking for the perfect bike. You can easily find the right machine at the right price even if its located 3000 miles away in another country.

As previously mentioned there are plenty of places that will provide you an opportunity to locate a cheap motorcycle. Along with your newspaper there are several trade magazines that have tons of great deals on reduced price motorcycles.

Most people start their search for a cheap motorcycle in a very likely place, their local biker shop. This gives you a chance to look at the bike, straddle it, and ask questions. If you are a first time motorcycle rider it is definitely recommended that you consider this as an option as information you can gain from the professional bikers in the shape is invaluable in making you purchase decision and can help you find the best bike at the cheapest price for you.

Just like you do with any other vehicle you need to exercise caution when you are buying a used motorcycle, granted it is a good indication if the bike has low mileage that tends to mean that the bike is in good condition. The only advice I can offer here is simply buyer beware and make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.

Along with the mileage you will need to look at other parts of the bike to determine if it has suffered any damage such as being in an accident. The first thing that will wind up hitting the ground are the handle bar grips. Check these to see if they are damaged in any way.

Check the chain to make sure its in good repair and look for signs of unusual wear and tear that might indicate that it hasn’t been kept well oiled. Someone who neglects their chain isn’t likely to pay attention to other less important component of the bike either. Also carefully consider the mileage shown with the amount of wear and tear the bike shows in general. Older machines had odometers which were easy to manipulate. If the odometer reads low and the bike looks like its been ridden through a war zone, their might be a problem. Even if the owner claims the bike was only ridden by their dad to church on Sunday, the truth is the owner probably rode it to Canada and back a few times. If the story they tell doesn’t add up to the mileage or the bike condition then walk away.

Go with your gut, a cheap used motorcycle doesn’t mean a poor condition motorcycle automatically. If you have any reservations at the time to complete the purchase stop and think about them carefully. Just because you have the “perfect” machine in front of you at a great price doesn’t mean you have to take it. If they start high pressure to get you to commit, walk away. You found one cheap motorcycle out there you will find another one that is a better fit and you feel right about.

When it comes down to it owning a used motorcycle may be the end point of the journey but finding the one thats best for you is the beginning of a long fun road you will go down with your bike. The time you spend finding the perfect bike can be as much fun as the time you spend riding it. Enjoy the journey to ownership, and definitely enjoy the journeys ahead in ownership.
