Eyjafjallajokull Glacier

The Iceland authorities have declared a state of emergency in a 100 mile area near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier after a volcanic eruption near it. Eyjafjallajokull glacier is shaped like a cone and it covers a volcano that is listed as active since ice age. It covers an area of hundred square kilometers.

Approximately 450 people were moved out of the area and no damage to property or life is reported yet. The scientist had apprehended an eruption after the small earthquakes earlier this month. Eyjafjallajokull glacier is ranked as the 5th largest glacier in Iceland. The emergency was declared because the eruption may have caused the Eyjafjallajokull glacier to melt or break leading to flood. However the aerial survey shows that the eruption was small and it has not broken the glacier to cause alarm. It occurs at passage between two glaciers so no great threat is posed. Lava has flown to nearly half a mile from the erupted volcano.

The volcanic eruption has occurred almost after 2 centuries in Iceland. The volcanic split is approximately 1 kilometer long. The airports in Iceland have been closed and the flights have been cancelled. The flights will resume to normal schedule on Monday. Some of the international flights diverted their flight routes because it was feared that the visibility will be affected by the ash and smoke from the volcano eruption.

According to the seismic experts an eruption was expected because of the frequent small earthquakes that were recorded up to 3 at Richter scale.
