Mrs. Doubtfire: Warm and gratifying comedy with earnest overtones in reference to a free spirit whose spouse divorces him after fourteen years. He couldn’t bear being split apart from his 3 kids, so he camouflages himself as a dowdy British housekeeper (under an Oscar quality makeup job) and gets himself employed to look after them. Williams is in top form, and director Columbus keeps the tale and characters moderately practical in an effort to drive home a humanistic message. Cast includes Robin Williams, Sally Territory, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Polly Holliday, Lisa Jakob, Matthew Lawrence, and Mara Wilson. (125 minutes,’93)

Red Tomahawk: Commander Keel saves the town from the Sioux Indians in this Western film with lots of likable actors in the cast. Cast includes Howard Keel, Joan Caulfield, Broderick Crawford, Scott Brady, Wendell Corey, Richard Arlen, and Donald Barry. (82 minutes,’67)

Nuts: Gripping drama in regards to a belligerent female designated an appointed attorney who should fight for her right to stand trial for manslaughter, while both the state and her own parents demand that she’s not in her right mind. Cast includes Barbra Streisand, Richard Dreyfuss, Maureen Stapleton, Eli Wallach, Robert Webber, and Hayley Taylor Block. (116 minutes,’87)

Staircase: Stun value of Burton and Harrison as a gay couple was all this film had going for it in’69, and nothing has changed as long as then, with the exception of increased viewer interest. Raise the Red Lantern: Striking reenactment of the life of a young concubine in’20’s China, as university educated gal (Gong Li) is sent to feudal nobleman’s palatial home to become his latest spouse. The relations between her and her predecessors, all of whom live on the premises. The interaction amid the ladies, the servants, and their master are brilliantly played out. The film provides an exceptional view of sex, dependability, and captivity during that time. Cast includes Gong Li, Ma Jingwu, He Caifei, Cao Cuifeng, Jin Shuyuan, Kong Lin, Ding Weimin, and Cui Zhihgang. (125 minutes,’91)

The In Laws: Everyone can relate to this uncomfortable situation. The in laws are coming and you just have to survive. Don’t try this at home! Unrated rendition runs 93. Cast includes Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, Richard Libertini, and Nancy Dussault. (103 minutes,’64)
