Anytime a Hollywood movie is produced the objective is to produce a movie that the public loves and that will become a blockbuster hit. Take a remarkable story, throw in a few remarkable actors along with some special effects and voila’, a huge box office success. But it doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes a movie will contain everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.
Lantana – Heartrending, adult tale of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
Believe in me – Still one more 1970s film that is all about drug tribulations. Working gal Bisset finds herself completely dependant on speed while living in the East Village section of New York City. Cast includes Michael Sarrazin, Jacqueline Bisset, Jon Cypher, Allen Garfield, and Kurt Dodenhoff. (90 minutes, 1971)
Cry the Beloved Country – Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s beloved novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his wayward child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been murdered. We see exceptional work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
Slaughter’s Big Ripoff – A murderer is still playing games with the Mob in this dull action film. McMahon gives more effort to his role as the mafia boss than it merits. Cast includes Jim Brown, Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Don Stroud, Gloria Hendry, Dick Anthony Williams, and Art Metrano. (93 minutes, 1973)
Good to Go – Unremarkable fare in reference to correspondent Garfunkel, who’s framed on a rape-slaughter charge. Highlighted are the behaviors of such go-go groups as Redds & the Boys, Trouble Funk, Get rid of Brown & the Mind Scavengers, amid others. Cast includes Art Garfunkel, Robert Doqui, Harris Yulin, Reginald Daughtry, Richard Brooks, Hattie Winston, and Anjelica Huston. (87 minutes, 1986)
The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s solitary try at comedy is less foolish than some of his more solemn films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had real potential, and Mitchum pleasantly underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes, 1961)
Sexy Beast – A retired British mobster, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has excellent acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the spiteful perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)
Scandalous – Featherbrained facade in regards to investigative Television journalist who runs afoul of a team of con artists as he tries to extricate himself from a homicide charge. Cast includes Robert Hays, John Giegud, Pamela Stephenson, and Jim Dale. (94 minutes, 1984)
