“Disastrous” Major Earthquake Shakes Regions of Haiti

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – A major earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale has hit Haiti, according to an alert issued by the National Earthquake Information Center, U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports as to damages or injuries, although the Haitian ambassador to the U.S. told CNN “it was a disaster of major proportions.”
The alert defined the location of the epicenter as 6 miles south southwest of Carrefour, Ouesti, 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince and 11 miles west southwest of Pétionville, Ouest, Haiti.
The main earthquake was followed by an aftershock of 5.9, the Center announced immediately after the preliminary report.
